Sensei Kurt Buxey started his karate career in the late 70's, under the instruction of Shihan Mike Lambert, Shihan Kim Roberts & Shihan Dave Arnold. Mike & Dave trained on the Isle of Wight & Kim in Southampton. Training 5 nights a week in Southampton and all day Sunday on the Isle Of Wight.
Sensei Kurt trained alongside Sensei Gavin Mulholland and in 1980-1 they both passed their 1st Dan gradings. In 1983-early1984 Sensei Kurt, along with Sensei Gavin, passed their 2nd Dan grade. In 1985-6 Sensei Kurt formed his own club, Solent Goju-ryu karate, he still trained with Shihan Kim at his house at weekends. Before long the club had grown to the point that Sensei Kurt was soon teaching 6 days a week. Sensei Kurt took his 3rd Dan grade in Liverpool on a course with Kim. In 1987 the club joined Bukonkai international.
1992-3 Sensei Kurt graded to 4th Dan during a specialist Kata course in Reading. In 1997 Solent Goju-ryu joined the EKO (English karate organisation) where Sensei Kurt took his 5th Dan in Birmingham. In 1999 the club formed it's own association called the Solent Martial Arts Association
