Goju Ryu is a traditional Okinawan Martial Art formally established in 1933. It is based on several southern styles of Gong Fu from the Foochow area of China. While the syllabus focuses on unarmed self-defence techniques and principles, this is a full scope art which includes classical weapons, throws, groundwork, fitness training and mental preparation.
Initially the focus is on self-defence techniques that are natural, simple and effective. This is then systematically developed into dealing with more complex situations and solutions. The name 'Goju Ryu' means 'hard-soft school', which emphasises the aim of incorporating all types of movements- relaxed and flowing to fast and direct. This has led to a rich and dynamic style that is appropriate for anyone.
